Need a cool down? Amanda Stuckey, author of one of my favorite food blogs, shares quirky recipes that will help prevent you from overheating this summer. So take a load off, escape the Texas inferno, and enjoy these chilly treats!

Agave Mint Lemonade

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 1/2 cups water
3/4 cup agave
10 mint leaves

Chop the mint leaves and muddle them with a wooden spoon in the bottom of the pitcher. A little bit of agave speeds up the muddling process. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Serve over lots of ice.

Just Banana & Peanut Butter Ice Cream

3 bananas, peeled
2 tbs peanut butter (or almond butter)

Cut the bananas into thin slices and arrange them on a plate. Freeze for about 1-2 hours. Remove the bananas from the plate with a spatula and blend in a blender or food processor. (I used an immersion blender in a bowl because it's all I have handy.) The bananas will resist you a bit at first but keep persevering. Soon, you will have a smooth, creamy mixture. Blend in the peanut butter. Et voila!

Mexican Avocado Mousse

1 large avocado
2 tbs cocoa powder
4 tbs powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 1/2 tbs almond (or any kind of) milk
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 egg whites
chili powder for garnish

With an electric beater or food processor, combine the first seven ingredients until smooth. (If you omit the cinnamon, this itself makes a great chocolate frosting.) In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites until stiff. Add the chocolate mixture to the egg whites and mix by hand until combined. Chill, and sprinkle with the chili powder.

Texas Wines: A Pairing of Excellence & Booming Business

Jessica Dupuy, one of TH&L’s fabulous freelance writers, recently started writing wine posts for Texas Monthly’s blog Eat My Words. For research, Dupuy went scouring around the Texas Hill Country looking for some great wines Texas has to offer. She also collected some big Texas wine facts along the way:

Texas has more than 280 family-owned vineyards and more than 180 wineries in the state.
The Texas wine industry contributes $1.35 billion in economic impact to the state.
Agri-tourism is huge for Texas wine: Texas wineries attract 958,000 tourists each year.
In recent years, winegrowers and winemakers have honed in on the grapes that work best for Texas rather than trying to grow what works better in California. Big Texas grapes include Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, and Simmillon
In 2007, Orbitz ranked the Texas Hill Country the #2 fastest-growing wine destination in the nation, second only to Napa.

And here are a few of her Texas wine recommendations (and what to pair them with too!):

Fall Creek Vineyards, Chenin Blanc - At $7.5 a bottle, this is a great, refreshing white wine that has just a hint of sugar. It pairs very well with spicy Tex-Mex or Thai.
Becker Vineyards, Viognier - This wine is found at just about every Texas grocery store. It definitely has some floral characteristics, but is pretty dry and is a great summer wine.
Fall Creek Vineyards, Mission Sauvignon Blanc - This is a nice crisp wine. Not grassy like some New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs and has a nice hint of citrus to it. The best part about this wine: It's about $10 and a portion of all proceeds from the purchase of this wine go to the Alamo Foundation to aid in the restoration of this Texas landmark.
Texas Hills, Kick Butt Cab - Depending on the vintage, this wine varies in price, but for a Texas Cabernet, this is a full-bodied wine that stands up well with big red meats.
Fall Creek Vineyards, Tempranillo - Though this is only available at the Fall Creek winery, it's a wine to watch. Tempranillo will easily be considered the grape of Texas in the next few years, and these grapes were grown at the new vineyard at the Salt Lick in Driftwood. This wine is big but has smooth tannins and a lot of rounded juices. We happened to try it AT the Salt Lick with a big family-style dinner including brisket, sausage, and ribs. It was the perfect match.
Mandola's, Montepulciano - As the winery name implies, Mandola's is serious about growing Italian style grapes in Texas. Though they have a few stars on the rise, the Montepulciano is a great wine for drinking right now. It's excellent with tomato-laden Italian sauces and pastas.

The auction will benefit ACT. The inspiration of Texas artist Karen Vernon, ACT aims to raise funds for Texas arts programs in the short term, and in the long term inspire communities around the country and the world to create their own ACT programs.

Cavanaugh, I Smile As I Wait

From as far away as England and South America, artists have sent in original works for the auction. Works range form traditional oils, acrylic, and watercolor to photography, fiber art, metal works, and ceramics. Out of the 120 artists Vernon asked to submit an original work for the auction, 102 did. Artists include Dean Mitchell, Margaret Roseman, Linda Kemp, David Poxon, and Bernard Mendoza.

The art will be on display for previewing at The Gallery at Round Top, TX, from Mar. 17 to Mar. 19. The silent auction will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 20. Reservations for the auction are required. Collector’s Catalogs from the show are available for $65.

Film Screening: Visual Acoustics, The Modernism of Julius Schulman

In case you are need of a movie fix this weekend, but want to avoid the mainstream and maybe add a bit of knowledge to your design/architecture repertoire, the Regal Arbor Cinema in Austin is screening Visual Acoustics on Sunday, Mar. 7 at 2:50 p.m. The film, which celebrates the life and career of the late architectural photographer Julius Schulman, is narrated by Dustin Hoffman. Schulman is credited with bringing modern architecture to the mainstream, capturing the work of such geniuses as Frank Lloyd Write, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. The film, directed by Eric Bricker, has won the Mercedes-Benz Award for Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Austin Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at the Lone Star International Film Festival and Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking from the Newport Beach Film Festival. A Q&A with the Bricker will follow the single screening.

On Feb. 21, 2010, the Houston Rodeo held their 2010 Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition at Reliant Center. I’m convinced Austin had its first day of spring on Sunday. It may only be February, and we may have a cold front and wintry mix moving in tomorrow, but on Sunday with sunny skies, a warm breeze, and a temperature of 70-ish degrees, it was spring, which made me realize that I may not quite be ready for it. Haley Henman Gallery hosts a two-day “guerilla” exhibit ‘Work Prints’ Commerce Street Bridge to Westmoreland Road; a Time Capsule. The show attempts to document Forth Worth Ave. in Dallas and anticipate the coming changes to the North Oak/West Dallas area. It will feature the work of 20 local photographers (including one we love to work with at TH&L, Dan Piassick) who each focused on different properties – assigned by lottery - on Fort Worth Ave. Photographers include Les Hall, Kenda North, Howard Milner, Scott Jenke, Charles Reed, Joshua King, John O'Donnell, Ken Smith, Adam Fish, Kent Barker, Dan Piassick, Jeff Baker, Richard Doherty, Manuel Pacina, Larry Travis, Scott Keith, Robin Sachs, Eva Gordon, Mari Hidalgo, and David Lyles.

Historic Inspirations

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has partnered with Lowe’s EverTrue brand to create a moulding collection inspired by homes at National Trust Historic Sites. The most recent addition to the collection is the Italianate Mansion inspired by Texas’s very own Villa Finale in San Antonio (opening this year).

Villa Finale was the home of leading preservationist Walter Mathis of San Antonio. Mathis is largely recognized for catalyzing the revitalization of the King William neighborhood in San Antonio, was also an advocate for city and statewide historic preservation, and an avid collector of artifacts displayed at Villa Finale. European furniture, fine and decorative arts, memorabilia relating to Napoleon Bonaparte, work by Texas artists Mary Bonner and Julian and Robert Onderdonk, and Texas decorative arts and furniture fill the rooms. Mathis purchased the home in a state of disrepair and spent two years restoring it.

The one-of-a-kind designs promise to add character and charm to any home. Each of the six styles includes a crown, chair, casing, and base moulding. In addition to the Italiante Mansion, the other five styles are the Grand Estate of the Federal Era was inspired by Woodlawn in Alexandria, VA; the Historic American Plantation by Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, VA; the Classical Presidential Residence by the Woodrow Wilson House in Washington D.C.; the Country Estate by Chesterwood in Stockbridge, MA; and the Southern Plantation by Shadows-on-the-Teche in New Iberia, LA.

Tying the Knot In Style: Wedding Trends 2010

I was fortunate to attend Austin Wedding & Event Coordinator’s (AWEC) annual media luncheon yesterday at the AT&T Conference Center (which has fantastic food, by the way), showcasing wedding trends for the upcoming year.

Being in the mist of planning my very own wedding, I was particularly excited about the event and the opportunity to pick the brains of Austin’s events experts. Several of the emerging trends for weddings I found particularly intriguing, like an abundance of turquoise, an appreciation of vintage, action food stations, late-night snacks, sustainable food, and DIY Brides.

Here is what the experts are saying. But keep in mind, trends can provide inspiration, but always do what you like and listen to your heart. This is your special day.

Colors:

Bold & Bright - Bold colors, such was turquoise, as well as yellows, grays, and purples
Earth tones
Rich tones – Think velvets, wine, and chocolate
Purple - All shades of purple pulled together for a complete look. (Ex. Purple bridesmaids dresses)
Metallics with a splash of color. Think shiny and sequined.
Tomato – Classic red.
Aurora – Class yellow-green tone.
Tone on tone, bright on bright, as well as unique color combinations. Brides are getting creative.
Neutrals are always popular for the more traditional bride.

Vintage is the New Black: Bethany Childress, 36 Street Events

Break away from most wedding traditions, but keep the ones involving family and the things that are truly important.
Make the Old New – The popular TV series Mad Men has inspired many to incorporate vintage into everyday attire and living. The music industry and jazz-inspired artists/music have contributed to a move towards vintage as well.
Bridal fashion – Wedding gowns are showcasing unique touches while maintaining classic lines inspired by Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. In classic style, change into a “going away” outfit at the end of the night.
Reuse objects and accessories from your mother’s, grandmother’s, sister’s wedding, etc. Use pieces of the family china for serving and decoration.
Ask you videographer to use real film to give your wedding video a black and white, more movie-like look.
Décor – Pastels (light pinks, ivories, gold) and art deco patterns contribute to a vintage vibe. Use champagne saucers instead of flutes, embellished dishes versus plain white, chandeliers, and antique vases.
Make your wedding an experience rather than just another event.

DIY Bride: Harper Ferguson, Bella Flora Creative

The DIY Bride (Do It Yourself Bride) is creative, thrifty, blog obsessed, an out-of-the-box thinker, and fearless.
Centerpieces – Think antiques or other things of importance. Paper and fabric flowers.
Embellishing – Embellish everything to make it your own. Bridesmaids, embellishing your shoes for some flair.
Everlasting bouquets – To create bouquets to keep rather than throw away, add vintage buttons and fabrics, as well as jewelry pieces to create something to cherish and keep.
Do It Yourself does not mean doing it alone – Get a group of people together and get creative, it can actually be a fun, bonding experience that gets people involved.
Resources – There are a plethora of web sites and blog with templates for the DIY Bride, including You Tube for instructional videos. If you want something handmade but are not inclined to do it yourself, check out etsy.com where everything is handmade and handcrafted.

LIGHTING

Lighting is more than flicking a switch to see what is going on, it is all about creating ambiance. Lighting can take a generic room and make it your own.

Three Key Lighting Elements:

Highlighting décor - spotting stations, florals, fabrics, etc.
Uses of color – Convey a mood or feel (for example, a club-like atmosphere).
Textures & Projections – Such as monograms and patterns. The industry term is “gogo” (as in projecting gogos).

Are you a “foodie”? If so, you’re in luck.

Customize your favorite foods into action stations, such as a Frito pie station (served in a bag or a bowl), grilled cheese station (pick you cheese, add ons, and condiments), slider station (kobe, bison, or beef), and dessert stations (crepes, crème brulee, s’mores, ice cream Sundays, or a carnival theme), where guests can customize and “create their own.” Stations are a great way to get guests involved in the food. The possibilities are endless.
Farm to Table – For brides who are concerned about local, organic, or sustainable food. One example is a caprese salad station with local tomatoes, local fresh mozzarella cheese, and a variety of basils.
Tasting Menus – Multiple courses small portions. Pick a theme – Mexican, Spanish, French, Greek, Local, Italian, etc.
Cocktails – Is the most important ingredient to a successful wedding. Signature cocktails named after the bride and groom, a signature cocktail at each eating station (margaritas at the taco station, etc.). Serve cocktails immediately when guests arrive and it will set the tone for a memorable night.

Dallas: Galerie Zuger Opens

The Dallas Design District has an art newcomer – Galerie Zuger, the recently opened fine art gallery on Dragon Street. Their 5,000-square-foot showroom exhibits an eclectic mix of paintings, graphics, and sculptures from internationally recognized artists. Gib Singleton – Galerie Zuger exclusively represents this world-renowned sculptor and has the largest collection of Singleton’s work, including a replica of the crucifix he designed for the crosier of Pope John Paul II, now carried by Pope Benedict XVI, and the cowboy art that placed Singleton in the Cowboy Hall of Fame. “Gib's religious art started at the Vatican where he was a staff artist and worked on the restoration of priceless artworks, including the Pieta by Michelangelo. Bathroom Design Tips from Hunter Douglas

Recipe: Rio Star Grapefruit Margarita

Luckily for us, it's citrus season - oranges and grapefruits abound. Incorporating citrus sunshine into your life could not be easier or perfect for your next cocktail - substitute grapefruit juice for lime juice in a margarita.

Rio Star Grapefruit Margarita

Ingredients:

4 cups Rio Star Grapefruit Juice (about 6 grapefruit)

2 shots of orange liqueur or triple sec

8 shots of tequila

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a pitcher and stir to combine.

2. Rim glass with lime wedge and dip in mixture of 1/2 sugar and a 1/2 coarse salt.

3. Pour over ice and serve.

4. Garnish with fresh grapefruit wedge and mint.

One-of-a-kind Dog Houses on Display

Starting today, Jan. 22, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS: DIFFA is displaying one-of-a-kind architect designed dog houses on the 1st floor of the Galleria Dallas in the Saks Fifth Avenue Court. Designed by Bentley Tibbs, Perkins + Will, Wayne Cage, L.A. Fuess Partners, Inc. and Russell Buchanan, the dog houses will be on display through Feb. 2.

The over-the-top designs will be auctioned at the Ben E. Keith DIFFA 2010 Silent Auction Soiree on Feb. 3 at Union Station in downtown Dallas. Tickets are $25 per person in advance, $35 at the door.

The Dallas DIFFA chapter is the National Foundation’s largest and most successful chapter in the country and has granted more than $4.5 million dollars to AIDS service organizations in the North Texas area. DIFFA plays a major part in HIV/AIDS funding, awareness and prevention education in the North Texas area.

Our Crystal Ball: Interior Design Predictions for 2010

The inspiration for this month's article is a little off the beaten path. We know you have already seen numerous posts and publications on must-haves for the New Year. And, while this composition offers similar information, the source of the skinny is a little something new.

You see, we just recently introduced a bewitching new addition to our inventory. Global Views has presented their "Fortune Teller" sconce (below), and its beauty stirs all kinds of allure and enchantment in the minds of the designers here. So, we have decided to look to the crystal ball in this captivating sconce for the future of our industry.

Our crystal ball has referenced some inside scoop from revered international interior designer officials, as well as some other savvy soothsayers in the field. But we also have it on good authority that the crystal ball has forecasted our interior design future by also researching the runway. You have heard us opine in articles past on the almost infallible predictor that runway fashion is of home décor. But, maybe now more than ever, we are going to see some pretty literal translations of catwalk cultus to room rage. At least that's what the wall-hung clairvoyance is telling us.

Techno-logical Allure:

It's a difficult chore to ignore the omnipresence of technology in our 21st century lives. Everywhere you turn, there it is. Be it your auto's navigation system or the grocery store check-out line, almost every component of our daily routine is now digital.

But, before your imaginations head directly to Jane Jetson's Turbo Toaster and floating TV, allow me to explain how we see a contemporary application of technology's influence on interior design is unfolding.

Today's interpretation of technology in design is a more subtle approach to translating the lines and colors of industrial science. Shades of muted silvers and metallic neutrals will be seen with charged shades of copper and platinum. A "futuristic" flare, only slightly reminiscent of this attempt in the 50's, will appear in fabrics, such as sturdier weaves that have been brushed with hints of sheen, as well as in layering of diaphanous textiles in mineral hues.

Furniture and hardware will also read of this applied science influence, as seen in the ensemble and the kitchen below.

Rustic Revisited:

Rustic was all the rage a couple of decades ago, and it's still an appealing motif in the right space. But soon, we'll be exposed to rustic interiors like you have not seen before, with an emphasis on sleeker rural elements. Accents of chunky wool, tweed and flannel can now accompany cleaner lines and colors. Even denim, yes denim, is back with the appropriate accompaniment. And quilted fabrics on walls and accent pillows will marry beautifully with an otherwise non-pastoral ambience.

The color rust, itself, makes a reemergence, as well as does some other saturated neutrals, such as pewter and taupe. Even teal is on tour again, being balanced by thicker, earthy fabrics and wall coverings. This motif is also using herringbone and waffle patterns with supple embellishments.

In the fashion statements below, you will find that rustic can be chic. High style is not just for shimmer and sheen anymore.

The New Natural:

The minimalistic "natural" of the last decade has metamorphosed into an organic design that speaks of elegance and a touch of whimsy. Fabrics are fluid instead of stiff, and colors will be more similar to vegetation that of sand and soil. Rich, mossy greens can be paired with aqueous crepes, gauze and tulle. This pure look has matured to romantic.

Southern Style:

Nope, not the South you're thinking. Think a litter further below the equator. Today's Southern is South America. Specifically Brazil, whose cultural depth is spreading quickly into our fashions industries. Centuries of music, language, art and cuisine are all numbers in the equation that has yielded Brazil's design influence. Spicy colors that "dance" and woven fabrics that are "delicious" combine to create an ambience that combines dry with wet and rustic with fresh.

Base colors are clay and cactus with chili pepper reds and greens for oomph. Artisan textiles, such as lace and embroidery appear here, too.

Back to Basics:

History, as well as studies on trends, has shown us that when the economy suffers in our country, fashion, both in attire and interior design, returns to a more traditional persuasion. It is human nature to wish to revisit memories of the past in times of environmental stress.

This temperament typically means that we begin to crave again the creature comforts of traditional surroundings. Thus, this year, our instincts may drive our interior nesting, and we will ditch the contemporary for the comfy. Even a resurgence of "Contemporary Americana" with a twist will be popping up all over this year. Remember you heard it here first!

Favorite Find: Drape Vases by Tsunami Glassworks

I have to say, it was quite a joy coming across these Drape Vases today by glass artisans Eva Milinkovic and Kriston Gene at Tsunami Glassworks. The vibrant, yet soft colors of the vases remind me of an O’Keefe painting and their organic oblong shape and curves express the movement of water. Each vase is made from molten glass by hand in Tsumani’s studio in Windsor, Ontario, Canada .

Tsunami Glassworks, a collaboration between Eva Milinkovic and Kriston Gene, provides and opportunity for the couple to fuse their artistic visions into each piece created. Recognizing a need for bright an edgy expressions in the design industry, Milinkovic and Gene aim for each piece of art to evoke clean shapes and tactile design.

The Drape Vase collection represents the fluid nature of glass suggesting movement (other collections include Soft Boxes, Tubes, Cell Bowls, Wisp, Bark, and Drop). Drape Vases come in two sizes: 18 inches high by 8 inches and 22 inches high by 6 inches wide (small 18-inch, $650; large 22-inch, $700). Cookbook: Simple Fresh Souther by Matt and Ted Lee

Readying a magazine for press and redesigning a web site (the new texashomeandliving.com will be up and running soon!) doesn’t exactly promote timely blog posts, which is why this one is so very delayed. But lucky for me, it is still more than appropriate for this time of year with minds on the holidays, gift giving, celebrations, and hunkering down in the kitchen. On Dec. 2 the Lee Brothers – Matt and Ted – were at Book People promoting their second cookbook Simple Fresh Southern: Knock-out Dishes with Down-Home Flavor. You may recall The Lee Brothers Southern Cookbook: Stories and Recipes for Southerners and Would-be Southerners (2006), which was a big hit to say the least and received the James Beard Award for Cookbook of the Year in 2007.

Matt and Ted were charming, friendly, and more than happy to make recommendations on where to eat in Charleston, their hometown (The Hominy Grill is a must-stop. Fig and McCrady's too.). According to Matt and Ted, they always get asked three questions:

1) Are they really brothers? Answer: Yes. Ted is the younger brother, Matt the older.

2) Where is your restaurant? Answer: They don’t have one and actually have no desire to have one.

3) Where did you steal the recipes from? Answer: Not native Southerners (gasp!), Matt and Ted lived in Manhattan until Ted was 7 and Matt was 9 (in the 70s) until they were transplanted to Charleston and their adjustment to Southern culture and Low-Country food began. They soon fell in love with the culture where “shrimping” is a sport and/or the afternoon activity. As “New York transplants” Matt and Ted didn’t have Grandma’s rich recipe library to refer to and explore from. Instead they learned Southern food from a many different and special people. They soon realized that taking Southern cooking traditions seriously is about having fun with them. Their first book, The Lee Brothers Southern Cookbook, pays homage to those mentors.

The first books also represents a time of their lives past – unmarried, they had the freedom and time to devote 4 hours to making a complex gumbo. Simple Fresh Southern is all about innovative uses for Southern ingredients, like buttermilk cheese (p. 93), which is made like ricotta, but with buttermilk instead of milk. Old Southern community cookbooks – with plenty of cream of mushroom soup casserole recipes – were another source of inspiration. Taking an old, weighted recipe, Matt and Ted bring it into the 21st century with fresh ingredients and innovative twists. They also take regional classics from outside the South and make then Southern, like the Shrimp and Deviled-Egg Salad Rolls, a play on New England’s lobster rolls.

Clean design, wonderful anecdotes, and vibrant, crisp photography make Simple Fresh Southern a cheerful and playful kitchen companion. I look forward to many Southern adventures in with Matt and Ted, even if they won’t actually be present.

Oh, and their answer to the skinny boy question (how do you stay so skinny when you eat such rich, Southern food)—everything in moderation. Spoken like true cooks.

Wine Champions: Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo International Wine Competition

Those familiar with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo know that it is much, much more than, well, a livestock show and rodeo. In addition to the two, it is an entertainment, food, and wine destination. A charitable event, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is committed to benefiting youth, supporting education, and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions, and presentation.

November 14 -15, The Show held its seventh annual International Wine Competition. With over 1,761 wines entered from 583 wineries, and sixteen countries the competition was stiff. The panel of 15 judges – local, national, and international wine experts - awarded 1,250 medals. I cannot imagine how much tasting that required.

With the weather cooling down after a long record-hot summer in central Texas, we can all finally be outdoors and actually enjoy it. Over the last few weeks, we’ve had some magically sunny, cool, crisp days that remind me of California, where there is not a cloud in the sky. Mid-day picnics, savoring morning coffee at an outdoor café, alfresco dining, spontaneous walks to take in the fresh, cool air, sunshine – I just want most of every single day. And if I had an outdoor living area - besides my second-floor, 5-by-5 patio – I’d be inspired to make the most of my outdoor living space – adding aesthetic elements, a fountain to provide the sound of running water, or a lamp to provide a soft enchanting light. Anything to tempt me to stay outdoors forever.

So, when I came across a few of Stone Forest’s designs for outdoor living, I knew I had to share them. Their artistic, handcrafted, eco-friendly architectural elements made in their New Mexico studio are perfect for a garden, patio, terrace, or any outdoor space. Design Tools: Color Visualizer

In a recent post I wrote about the importance of color. Color Visualizer, which launched on sherwin-williams.com not too long ago, allows homeowners, designers, and contractors to play around with and explore color in a noncommittal fashion. There is no longer a reason to paint an entire room one color only to realize you hate it. So, how does it work? You upload a photo of an interior room or exterior of a building and you can work within those images trying different paint combinations to see how they might look in those spaces. It is like virtually trying on clothes or a new hairstyle before you actually buy the clothes or cut your hair. Once you find the right combination for you, you can save, print, or download the colorized images you've created. In addition, you can play around with different hues and saturations of a certain tone as well as find out light reflectance, RGB, and HEX values for each color selected.

If you want to take exploring color in you life even further, Sherwin-Williams has an iPhone application - ColorSnap - that allows you to match real-life color inspiration with a paint color.

Holidays 2009: Wine & Food Pairings

Just in time for the Holidays, Texas wine experts share fresh ideas on how to pair local wines with local flavors. Thanksgiving may be a little over two weeks away, but it is never too early to start planning your menu.

Want to pair wine and food like the pros? Here's what wine professionals across Texas recommend for your holiday gathering.

Merrill Bonnarigo, owner of Messina Hof Winery and Resort, says if you like white wine, pair your turkey with a Gewürztraminer. If you like red, pair it with a Pinot Noir. And for a holiday wine and cheese gathering, try Port with a nice, blue-veined Stilton.

Nichole Bendele, public relations coordinator for Becker Vineyards, suggests staying away from a heavier wine with your traditional meal.

"It would overpower," she said. "An Alsatian-style Gewürztraminer is good with holiday turkey, as well as the traditional cranberry sauce. Some light-bodied Pinot Noirs can complement holiday turkey and some lighter-style Zinfandels can also be fun. And there is nothing wrong with using wine for reduction sauces or adding to gravies, or as a meat marinade."

At Bell Mountain Vineyards, cooler weather means it's time for KrisKindel. This red wine, in the European tradition, is served hot (but never boiled).

Sangiovese is the choice at Barking Rocks Winery where they recommend pairing it with spicy Italian appetizers.

Alamosa Wine Cellars owner Karen Johnson suggests dining with a Texas Rose. "It's a wine that holds up against the myriad flavors on the holiday table, yet doesn't overpower the star of the table, the roast turkey," Johnson said.

Pillar Bluff Vineyards owner Gill Bledsoe enjoys the holiday with Swiss cheese soup and a Chenin Blanc, followed by the main course -- duck and Pillar Bluff Vineyards' red Enology 101.

Port is on the menu at Stone House Vineyard. It can pair with a dessert -- or be one. "Drink it with fruitcake, chocolate or just by itself!" owner Angela Downer Moench says.

Bonarrigo says the emphasis on finding the perfect pairing can take the joy out of a meal. Still, she says, there is science in the art of pairing, and certain food and wine alliances can maximize their combined flavor potential.

She explains that, in most cases, people try to pair an entrée or food item with a wine. But you can achieve the desired result by using certain spices or ingredients in your meal, regardless of what you're serving. In other words, while a cook can't change the composition of a favorite wine, he or she can change the way a dish is prepared to get a sumptuous food-wine flavor combination.

For some reason I've always loved “collaboration cookbooks” like the Junior League cookbooks – Necessities & Temptations or Stop & Smell the Rosemary. I think my awe lies in the power and dedication behind the books – hundreds of people coming together to create a book of remembrances. Each recipe represents a memory, a milestone, a hope.

A collaboration between the Fort Worth Botanical Society, Inc., Garden Club Council of Fort Worth, and The Fort Worth Garden Club, Inc., A Gardner in the Kitchen is represents the true spirit of a “collaboration cookbook.” With 350 recipes selected from those submitted by members, the book also features a brief history of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden - which was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places - and beautiful photos of scenes from the garden. All proceeds from the book will be dedicated to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s education and educational outreach programs benefiting the Fort Worth community.

Each section – Appetizers & Beverages, Breads & Brunch, Soups, etc. – features an area or element of the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. For example, Appetizers & Brunch introduces the Upper Rose Garden known as the Rose Ramp that is illustrative of the “Classic Period” of the American public rose garden; Soups features the Japanese Garden, which started as the vision of Scott Fikes, Fort Worth Superintendant of Horticulture from 1985 to 1974, and is now considered one of the premier Japanese Gardens in the country.

A Gardner in the Kitchen is complete with menu suggestions for a Van Cliburn Party, First Day of Spring Brunch, July 4th Backyard Cookout, Concert in the Garden Picnic, and several more special events and party ideas.

Flipping through, a few recipes that caught my eye … Amaretto Baked Brie, Goat Cheese Nachos; Pumpkin Dip to be served with Gingersnaps, apple slices, or pound cake cubes; Cranberry Margaritas, Fontina Asparagus Tart, Texas 1015 Onion Soup, Dove and Sausage Gumbo, Texas Duck with Pecan Stuffing, Baked Garlic Cheese Grits, World’s Best Cheesecake (now that might be something worth pursuing), Oatmeal Cake with Pecan-Coconut Topping … and that’s just the beginning. Color: Color Trends 2010

As Georgia O’Keeffe wisely knew and exhibited in her work, color has the power to inspire and to express things that can only be felt. It is a very powerful tool in designing one of the most personal of spaces – the home. As the colors and the clothes you wear communicate unspoken insights to who you are, the colors you select for your home will express what the space means to you and what you need from your home.

To help you in making discerning paint choices for the coming year, whether you’re revamping your home for personal use or to sell it, Debbie Zimmer of the Paint Quality Institute, shares the residential color trends for 2010.

“Good Morning” colors consist of honey-like hues (think tan or pale gold), coral, yellow, and mineral gray. According to Zimmer, homeowners are taking on smaller, more manageable home improvements such as the addition of a morning kitchen to a bedroom or a home office – hence the “Good Morning” colors. These hues are fresh, clean, and comfortable, not to mention cheerful (besides the mineral gray).

Ceilings should no longer be ignored. The “Good Night” palette suggests painting the ceiling a tint, tone, or shade of the wall color or add a soft touch with a pastel. “Good Night” consists of pastel hues (pale blue or shell pink), midnight blue, eggplant, and wine – all are perfect to brighten up bedrooms and baths or to warm up a family space.

Now for foyers, kitchens, and family living spaces, Zimmer suggests the “Good Bye” palette. Representing an assortment of simplistic hues that work well as a backdrop, letting other design elements shine, color recommendations include khaki paired with crisp white, mid-toned blues, off-white and bisque, and surprisingly black.

A New Home for Anteks

Everyone at some point needs a fresh start, something to change things up. Twenty-year Lover's Lane staple Anteks Home Furnishings in Dallas has found a new eco-friendly home in the Dallas Design District. The 8,000-square-foot showroom with concrete floors, antique and salvaged wood, and Thybony wallpaper highlights provides a backdrop for the antiques, heirlooms, collectibles, custom furniture and upholstery, design services, and sophisticated yet western-rustic inventory Anteks is known for. The new store is more designed-based and has a more residential feel than the previous location, which owner Jason Lenox thinks will help customers translate the Anteks style into their own homes. It seems to be the natural progression of design firms to at some point launch their own collection of say furniture, linens, tableware, draperies, etc. So, it comes as no surprise that Houston interior design firm Manchee Woods Design will launch their very first tabletop linen collection, fittingly called Layers, on Oct. 1. Inspired by nature, architecture, and the beauty of simplicity, the collection will feature napkins, placemats, and table runners embellished with unique monogramming and embroidered motifs. The collection consists of 10 core colors and two seasonal colors of 100 percent washable cotton or linen complete with a variety of napkin rings and tabletop accessories.

Do something good: Ten percent of all orders placed by Nov. 12 will benefit Recipe for Success, a non-profit charity dedicated to decreasing childhood obesity by changing the way children understand, appreciate, and eat their food.

Classic Simplicity

The very first wallpapers were created to mimic expensive tapestries, marble, paneling in the homes of 16th-century nobles. It was meant to fool the eye with layered pigments and textures. Today one of the layering elements used is repurposed sand and recycled glass beads. Rum Cocktails & The Driskill Grill

Partnering with the established and historic Driskill Grill, their site for a rum cocktail pairing dinner last week, was an obvious choice for Appletons Estate Jamaica Rum . Starting in the Driskill Bar we sipped Appleton-Ting and Royal Aperitif cocktails and enjoyed tastings of steak tartare, fried oysters, and local goat-like cheese. Moving into the Grill, nestled in a corner, we sipped more cocktails (Rum Blossom and Jamaican Breeze), braved samplings of the Appleton Reserve, and were educated in the ways of tasting rum - appreciating the color, the scent, the taste as it rolls over the toungue, and the heat it creates in the throat and stomach. Paired with an appetizer platter of foie gras and caramelized bananas, ahi tuna tartare, and seared duck, followed by a main course of prawns and soft shell crab, and ending with an orange almond creme and chocolate tiramisu like dessert, the evening was a very memorable one.

Here are the recipes for the cocktails we sipped. I had no idea rum could be so versatile. Cold and refreshing, these are the perfect way to impress your guests this summer. Enjoy!

Rum Blossom

2 oz. Appleton Reserve

¼ White Peach

2 Lemon Wedges

½ oz. Maple Syrup

Muddle peach, lemons, and maple syrup together. Then shake with Appleton Reserve and strain into glass. Can be served in a rocks or martini glass.

Jamaican Breeze

Jamaican Breeze

1 ½ oz. Appleton Reserve

2 oz. Pineapple Juice

¼ oz. Ginger Juice

½ oz. Simple Syrup

2 dashes of Angostura bitters

Lime Wheel Garnish

Muddle fresh pineapple till you get 2 oz. of pineapple juice; muddle ginger to ¼ oz. of ginger juice, strain. Add Reserve, simple syrup, bitters – shake and strain into rocks glass.

ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter & Hotel Zaza

On this past Wednesday (June 10th) I was invited to attend the ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter's Design Awards Kick Off party at Houston's Hotel Zaza. Located in the Museum District with Rice University right across the street, the location could not be more perfect for an evening cocktail party and the site of ASID TGCC's Design Awards in September. And urban oasis, formerly the Warwick Hotel (as I was told), the building itself brought back many fond memories of the past for some of the attendees.

Held in the pool area, the wines were provided by Barefoot Wines and a strong "breeze" reminded us all of the unpredictable Texas weather you just have to learn to love. My favorite juicy tidbit of the night - if you have any sort of treatment in the Zaspa, you get full use of the pool/cabana area for the entire day. The cabanas, located at the far end of the pool, overlooking Herman Park, are modern and inviting escapes from the sun - a place to lounge and relax after a day of museums, shopping, or work if you are traveling for business.

The party was a chance for ASID designers and industry partners to get together, have a drink, enjoy a beautiful hotel, and to remind designers to submit their projects for the Design Awards. Also, it was announced that Texas Home & Living was selected to publish their Design Award winners in our November/December 2009 issue. We are thrilled!

If you have a deck or patio, be sure to consider how your landscaping will merge with these structures to provide that essential transition between your yard and home.

Once you have your plan in place, you can begin conceptualizing your backyard haven using some time-tested professional tips. One of the unspoken secrets of the pros is to include plenty of layering in your design. While using layers of plants isn’t the only design trend or secret out there, it is the one that makes the largest impact on how spectacular your garden or yard will look. So how should you use layers?

Here’s an example: First, position any bulky shrubs or tall, willowy Cypress-type trees in the background because eventually you’ll place flowers and smaller plants in front of these. This is commonly referred to as the “class photo” theory – taller students in the back, followed by those of medium height and, finally, the not-so-tall in the front.

You’ll also want to situate your tallest shrubs adjacent to any back barrier or hedge of your yard. Consider using a small pink-tipped flowering tree in front of the hedge, along with several dwarf boxwoods – which are great for shaping into unique hedging. Complement both layers with a bench, birdbath, awning, lattice, sculpture or pergola to polish off the look.

Other considerations in creating your horticulture haven are the seasons. You’ll want to select flowering plants that bloom during different times of the year, and distribute them throughout your landscaping so that you have even color all year long. There are a number of options for infusing autumn color into your yard, including shrubs, evergreens and vines that can extend your garden through the winter months.

Trellises and garden arbors, for example, can provide winter landscaping that won’t shudder under the burden of heavy snow or gusty winds. The corners of your backyard are also fantastic for imaginative landscaping and, therefore provide excellent locations for ivy-covered trellises coupled with crimson-colored flowering shrubs, or even a water garden. The sights and sounds of running water really improve the calming properties of your yard. From fountains to ponds, and everything in between, there’s a water feature to fit any budget.

For the perfect finishing touches, edge your yard with planted bulbs, colorful flora or fruit-bearing plants that boast a decorative branching structure to have your neighbors “green” with envy in no time.

Classy Trends ... Trendy Classics In our world, the word of what's the neatest and newest, we may not realize that some of the hippest "it" items in our cultures have actually been "in" for generations, even centuries in some cases, and are, in fact, also classic styles. We have selected a few pretty solid classics, in our book, that also happen to be smokin' hot today, right this minute.

Animal Print is Here to Stay

Various animal prints have been making a roar ever since we can remember. As a matter of fact, they may very well have been around at the inception of interior design. Caveman says to Cavewoman, "Me bring animal hide to cave for warm floor, Argh." Says Cavewoman back to Caveman, "No in that corner, in that one!" This is about as classic as you can get.

Whether in the cave or under your plasma television, animal print décor has a permanent spot in Interior Design. And how hot is it today? It's on fire (but don't tell Caveman, they haven't discovered this phenomenon yet). And you can throw it in with almost anything. From duvets to draperies, chairs to tchokes, these patterns can fit into a variety of spaces needing a little interior oomph.

Of course, today animal print rugs do not mean animal skin. In fact, the very name indicates that this is not supposed to be the real skin but only their prints.

This tasteful addition of a zebra print makes this room downright snappy.

And we bet you've never seen a vanity quite like this one.

We usually see our furry friends making minor appearances in accents such as throw pillows and trimming. Toss in some zebra with your neutrals and maintain a mellow mood, but with a little zip to cure the boredom. Add a touch of tiger to some bright colors and observe how the room transforms from juvenile to jazzy.

Soft and Touchable Fabrics of our Being

No matter the genre or era, you're going to find at least one or two soft, yummy fabrics in the design repertoire. In the sixteenth century, we were influenced by the French's flair for rich, luxurious textures such as velvet and satin. By the eighteenth century, cotton was actually banned in much of Europe, since it was imported from India, and, in an attempt to preserve the local textile industry, homes were filled with locally produced fabrics such as silk and delicate wools.

Today? You guessed it... these comforting and eye-pleasing surfaces have a place in almost every trendy dwelling. These days you will find an abundance of a variety of silks and suedes that are gentle to the touch and soothing in mood. Even a modern space lends itself to a hint of sheen and space for a soft surface.

Ikat or I Don't Cat?

We think it's pretty cool when a weave that's been produced in all areas of the world since the fifteenth century emerges as a ubiquitous trend in our industry. Pronounced i-cat, and originating in India and South-East Asia, these gorgeous patterns were classic before we were even assigning the word "classic" to textiles.

And now, they're being featured in hippest interior design blogs and publications. Decorating with kaleidoscopic colors of indigenous textiles rich in texture and imagery is rewarding not only for the visual appeal it generates, but for the fact that it helps sustain age old craft traditions and low-income rural economies.

We adore his example of contemporary Ikat used in these two French sidechairs.

Black and White, You Got That Right!

If basic black and white ever go out of style, we'll eat our measuring tapes! We are this confident that the stability of this timeless classic will sustain the test of time. We think human beings may just be hard-wired to be drawn to the duo. Black meets white is the ultimate palette contrast and can be sharp, elegant, sexy, subtle, clean, funky, understated and over the top. This color combo is the California Cabernet of interior design.

As of late, we have noticed a plethora of black and white as additions to a myriad of interior concepts. As a matter of fact, we're not sure we have ever seen this color composite be so dynamic. Check out this stunning example of Hickory Chair's use of black and white in just the right places...

Stainless Stays

And that's our final answer. Seen everywhere now from water bottles to balconies, we're calling it: stainless steel is officially now a classic. This steel alloy does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as ordinary steel (it stains less) but it maintains steel's structural resilience and vast practicalities. Just as you can safely keep that little black dress in your closet, you can bet your stainless steel accents will endure.

The most traditional, as well as the most chic, interiors today will contain stainless steel. Almost certainly in the kitchen, and probably elsewhere, you'll find yourself hard-pressed to locate an abode without this element.

And Then There Was Soft Lighting

There will always be a time and place for the soft glow of a romantic lamp. Originally, delicately lit rooms were our only safe option. We had two choices: darkness or candle light. And every era since can evidence its existence in interior design.

These days it's beaming into many spaces in the home with particular vigor. We explained to you last month how important lighting is to textures and tones in your color schemes. We often stage a space with a gentle glow in mind to produce the attitude desired by our clients. Just the right illumination can yield a flawless feel.

We wouldn't be doing this assertion justice if we didn't mention that there's biology here. Dim lighting triggers the pupils in our eyes to expand in order to be able to see better in the darker environment. The pupils are also known to dilate when we are attracted to the opposite sex. So, the candle light and romance association is no fallacy, it's a science. So, it is pretty certain that we will forever find mood lighting an "attractive" option.

Red in Fredericksburg

On a trip to Fredericksburg yesterday with one of TH&L's freelance writers for an upcoming July/August feature, I was introduced to the Fredericksburg gem - Red. How I ever could have missed this home store on my many visits to the quaint German town, I have no idea. Housed in a 1890s limestone building on Main Street, Red is great for chic gifts, home furnishings, and home accents. Mixing sleek modern with and vintage, the mix of goods is visually interesting and fresh.

Capitalizing on years of display and design experience, Carolyn Moore, formerly of the infamous Homestead stores, opened Red with Karl and Mary Ransleben.

With some discipline, I walked away with only a wonderfully scented bar of soap from the sale table and the Original Edition of Table Topics: Questions to Start Great Conversations. The red block of cards enclosed in a solid lucite cube will be perfect for dinner parties.
